Fez
Welcome to Fez
Fez was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, and rightly so. It is one of the largest and though battered, the most intact medieval cities in Africa and the Middle East. It was once the capital of ancient Morocco, and remains the third largest city in the country. Fez is often referred to as the "North African Jerusalem," and it does resemble the city with its grand encompassing walls. The Medina of Fez is separated into two different cities: the new city (Fez el-Jedid) and the old city (Fez el-Bali). Walk into the old city, and take a step back one thousand years in time. Wind through crowded narrow alleyways and watch artisans at their work; tailors, weavers, alchemists, and calligraphers all practicing their arts like their ancestors had hundreds of years before. Taste the delicacies of Morocco and revel in the beauty and detail of the architecture of ancient monuments. Visit the famous tanneries, where the locals of Fez create natural dies in giant vats that form a honeycomb-like cluster of vivid colors. The new city is much more European, and lacks the charm of the old city. Instead it is filled with busy, though wide streets, and restaurants and hotels.
