Essaouira
Welcome to Essaouira
Only a few hours from both Marrakech and Casablanca, Essaouira is one of Morocco's most charming coastal towns. With white washed walls, blue windows, and sandy cobble streets, Essaouira stands strong against a rocky coast-line. Walk along the walls of the old fortress with canons facing the sea and trhow bread to the sea gulls. Known as "the city of wind," Essaouira is most bohemian of Morocco's cities, perhaps due to visits from Jimi Hendrix and Jack Johson, or the fact that it is home each year to the Gnawa Music Festival, which draws 450,000 visitors to listen to variety of music, ranging from traditional Gnawa to reague, jazz, and rock.
While there, make sure to visit the fish markets where you can buy fresh seafood ranging from sardines to baby sharks to eels, and have them grilled with spices right before your eyes. Enjoy your seafood with a hot cup of mint tea, tomato salad, and live music. Also, visit Essouira's unique souq to find many incredible artists boutiques mixed in with posters of Bob Marley and rastafarian styled apparel.
