Welcome to Chefchaouen

Just inland of Tangier, the city of Chefchaouen, also know as Chaouen, lies on the side of two high mountains surrounded by the Rif. Truly one of the most beautiful places in the world, Chefchaouen mixes clean white walls with a brilliant vivid blue doors and buildings that gives the impression of being in a fairytale. Climb up white stone stairs through narrow corridors to the water source that comes from the mountains and creates a stream that flows through the center of the city. Near the top, women pull up their skirts and wade in to their knees to do their washing.

Chefchaouen is also Morocco's leading producer of cannabis, explaining in part, why this sleepy city is a hot spot on the tourist trail. It is also one of the safest and least expensive places to visit in Morocco. While you are there, Chefchaouen has many great treks and hikes, as well as being a wonderful place to go shopping, as it has a unique selection of artisan crafts that cannot be found int he rest of the country, such as handwoven blankets and cedar wood furniture.

Chefchaouen History

Chefchaouen was founded by Jews and Muslims escaping Spain during the Spanish Inquistion. Despight its proxsimity to Europe, Chefchaouen only started to have European visitors after the 1920s, perhaps since the city was known for being one of the most hostile towards Europeans.
